Two and a bit weeks later.

Drunken Women post, 1st may 2009

Hi all, remember these guys.

The experiment using potting mix and different organic soil enrichment substances (fertiliser) I have around the place.

Well this is two and a bit weeks later.
(you really need to click on the photo to get a better idea of their growth)

From left to right is (as stated on the drunken woman post)
1. A mix of all
2. Half compost and potting mix.
3. Potting mix with two hand fulls of cow manure
4. Potting mix with a half a hand full of rooster booster fertiliser
5. Straight potting mix.

So far it's an even race between #1 and #4 and if you have ever wondered why your plants don't perform when planted into potting mix then just have a look at the lettuce in pots #5 to see why.

From what I can gather they are pretty gutless.
Only the potting mixes with some extras added perform.

I have to say I'm surprised with the growth rate from the pots with Rooster Booster in and had assumed the ones with compost would have done the best.
I also expected more from the cow manure pots, but I know that when I use it in the general garden areas it is a terrific soil conditioner, feeding the worms and helping to retain moisture in the soil.

From here it will be a test to see which one can or does maintain their fertility and growth.

Cheers and happy veggie gardening,
Stewart.

Looking interesting! The straight potting mix does not surprise me - I find that even the best potting mixed look like they are just made with stredded bark or something similar. Looking forward to a future update..

Cheers,
Tricia

It really is surprising that the compost or cow manure didn't do better. The potting mix that I bought this year had some nice organic fertilizer additions (as well as compost). I'm wondering if that is why my plants did so well.

Hi Stewart, I wish I could send you some of our rain!It is supposed to be early summer and it has rained incessantly for a week, pools of water everywhere. I have done a post on the garlic rust treatment and many thanks for your help we will just have to wait and see now but I dont think this rain is going to help matters.

I use commercial seed raising mix and I have not been very happy with the results,I will try potting mix and chicken pellets and see if that helps. Thanks for the tips Stewart.

Rooster Booster? I've not heard of that - will google it now (or is it just chicken poo?). This is interesting - we tried LOTS of different seed raising mixes and ended up making our own but the results are still mixed. Will share this with M. Thanks Stewart.

Hi Tricia, I actually feel ripped off.
You pay top dollar for a good potting mix and there is just no juice in it. Would explain why my repotted strawberry is not doing so well though.

Hi Daphne, certainly looks like it.

Hi Peggy, yes at the moment your worst enemy is rain and humidity.

Hi greenfumb, it makes you wonder what we are paying for when we have to fix up so called 'quality' products just to get them to perform. I'm guessing the average gardener would just accept what they get as being 'quality'.

Hi Jacqui, Rooster Booster is a pelleted chicken manure I picked up from Bunnings (mainly because of its price), and have since been quite impressed with the results I have been getting from its use.

Neat! I love when people experiment and post results on garden blogs.

When I originally commented I clicked the "Notify me when new comments are added" checkbox and now each time a comment is added I get three e-mails with the same comment.
Is there any way you can remove me from that service?
Thank you!

Do you ever run into any web browser compatibility problems?

A number of my blog visitors have complained about my blog not operating correctly in Explorer but looks great

Hello would you mind sharing which blog platform you're using? I'm looking to
start my own blog soon but I'm having a hard time choosing between BlogEngine/Wordpress/B2evolution and Drupal. The reason I ask is because your design and style seems different then most blogs and I'm looking for something unique.
P.S My apologies for getting off-topic but I had to ask!

Hey I know this is off topic but I was wondering if you knew of any widgets I could add to my blog that automatically tweet my newest twitter updates.
I've been looking for a plug-in like this for quite some time and was hoping maybe you would have some experience with something like this. Please let me know if you run into anything. I truly enjoy reading your blog and I look forward to your new updates.

Woah! I'm really digging the template/theme of this website. It's simple, yet effective.
A lot of times it's very hard to get that "perfect balance" between superb usability and visual appeal. I must say you've done a very good
job with this. Also, the blog loads extremely
fast for me on Internet explorer. Excellent Blog!
