More Baked Beans

Hi all,
I've been thinking about growing my own navy beans - a variety of Phaseolus vulgaris - so I can make my own baked beans (check out this baked bean recipe).

I found two good web sites on growing and using navy beans as well as a bunch of other info I found useful, so I'm going to share them here just in case anyone else wants to try their hand at navy beans.

Has anybody grown navy beans before? Care to share any thoughts?

Wikipedia has an article on bakes beans.

And just for a giggle here is Mother Goose with their Baked Bean song again.

Cheers and happy Baked Beaning :)

Hi gardeninginheels, I'm having trouble finding molasses so I might have to try treacle.

Hi Stewart, I had trouble finding molasses too, I think you need to try a chemist or a health food shop.

I always learn something new. Molasses is in every grocery store in the US. I never would have though it a hard to find thing, but I guess in Australia it is.

I use a LOT of dried beans every year. I would love to grow all of them. Right now I'm just growing a black and a pinto type bean. I would like to do navy beans too since I'm a Bostonian and Boston is known for its baked beans. One of Boston's nick names is Beantown.

OH my gosh, the MotherGoose video is hysterical! My kids ran right in as soon as they heard it. Who are these guys?

Molasses is delish on toast, my hubby always teases me and says it looks like Marmite. In beans, yummy, gives a sweet flavor you can't beat.
Beans beans, the marvelous fruit! you know the rest.

Hi Stewart, If all else fails, you can buy molasses in a store that sells food for horses and cattle (at least you can here in Sth. Oz)

Hi everyone. thanks for the suggestions re molasses.
The beans are in the oven and I went down the treacle path instead of molasses, hope it turns out alright.

JGH, MotherGoose are/were a 70/80's band from New Zealand.
