Time to give your asparagus a little kick along for spring.
After putting my asparagus to bed for winter the days are getting longer and warming up so it shouldn't be too much longer before asparagus spears start popping through the mulch.
Cheers and may your asparagus spears be plenty.
Stewart.

Time to Get Cracking
I'm pinching New Gippsland Seeds facebook post here but it's good advice and I'm sure they won't mind.
You'd better get cracking though, you're running out of time if you want to plant any of these bare rooted.
Cheers

Lisbon lemon
This was supposed to be a post which included a beautiful video of me planting my Lisbon lemon tree using my newly purchased GoPro camera.
But as much as I love my veggie garden I also love my daughter who, on my one day a week off, needed help moving house.
So the you beaut video is going to have to wait for another week or until Sunday if I can find a driver for the cab and give myself a day off.
I did manage to get two rows of onion seeds planted though. I planted the seeds thickly so as when they get to a good size I can transplant them into the remaining rows I've prepared.
What else? Oh, that's right, I cut the remaining old growth from the asparagus, covered them with some used coffee grounds and then put them to bed for winter with a thick straw mulch.
A little bit of general maintenance, a lot of watering, it's unseasonally warm for this time of the year, and that's about it for today.
Cheers till next time

Asparagus TLC.
A sparrow grass Tlc.
Last growing seasons left overs. Removed the weeds and trimmed up the dead spears.
A sprinkling of Searl's 5 in 1 and about 200 grams of Organic Plus fertilizer. If I had compost I'd have added a good bucket full of that as well.
Mulch it baby. No water it first and then mulch and then water it again.
A week later and 'ta da' Breakfast tomorrow.
Cheers
Stewart.

First assa
Just a quicky post. My first asparagus spear for the season about to go straight into my scrambled eggs.

B is for Birthday, P for planting and H for hope.

B is also for Bugger, bastard, bum, bitch, bloody, bloody, bugger and bum.
But no matter how much I stomp about,
No matter how much I curse and fuss,
No matter how much I wish today would miss the bus
or that tomorrow will be to late,
It ain't gonna change that today I turn 48.
P for planting. I got around to planting the purple A for asparagus this morning and some Beefsteak tomatos. As the soil has been previously prepared for other crops it was just a matter of adding some compost and cow manure and planting straight away.
H is for hoping like heck the two Isa brown hens, Bill and Ben, don't fly the coop and dig them all up.

Fare thee well my fellow bloggers and have a nice day
bfn Stewart.

A is for Asparagus
Well my second actually, you see the two Isa Brown chooks have taken to flying out of their provided accommodation and destroying the garden (I'm sure these girls don't understand the meaning of a shortened life span) along with the very first edible asparagus spear.
Not much you can do with one asparagus spear so I just chopped it up and added it to my scrambled eggs.
Very yummy too thank-you very much.
I'm up to my eyeballs in assignments and study atm but I hope to sneak out a bit later this arvo and plant them out.
Maggie Beer from Gardening Australia magazine claims the purple asparagus sends out less spears but they are fatter.
I guess I'll have to wait 12 months and let you know.
FWIW, I wrote this with one hand while waiting on the phone to the Australian Tax Office.
And I'm still waiting.

Well I'll be blowed

Well, cover me in honey and tie me to an ants nest, an asparagus crown I'd planted in August, which I'd all but given up on, has produced a spear. Veggies will never cease to amaze me.
Look very, very closely, It's roughly dead center.
