August, so far.

It's Friday the 16th and the end of a very wet week. And by wet I mean 89mm or 3 1/2 inches in the old money.

Absolutely fabulous rainfall for, what is usually, our driest month of the year and a great lead into our upcoming Spring.

Prior to the rain coming I had managed to make good progress on some gardening tasks, including

  • Planting two small rows of Pink Eye potatoes. My concern is that we may have had too much rain and some potatoes will have rotted. Time will tell.
  • I have also purchased and planted seven bare-rooted roses this season and boy oh boy have they enjoyed the rain.
  • Seeds sown include bee balm, meadow sage, beetroot, radish, and parsnip.
  • Seedlings include Chinese Cabbage, Yellow Leaf Lettuce and mini Cabbage, all showing vigorous growth after the rain.
  • I'm also experimenting with Lilium bulbs to see what will grow well in my "warm Temperate" climate. some are up and look like they are doing well and others I'm still waiting for.

Bulbs I planted earlier in the year, like Tulips, Daffodils, Dutch Iris and Anemones, also got a boost from the rain.

How's your August going so far? Wet, dry, cold or windy? I'm calling this August, the Goldilocks' August, just right.

Of course, if you're in the Northern Hemisphere you're heading into your Autumn (Fall, if you must).

Get The BEST Results by sowing Brussels Sprouts Seeds In Spring.

Mid-October to early November is the best and really the only time to plant Brussels Sprouts seeds according to Lambley Nursery so here we go! LAMBLEY NURSERY. https://lambley.com.au/plant/brussels-sprouts-abacus-f1-brassica-oleracea Brussels Sprouts 'Abacus' F1 (Brassica oleracea) A replacement for ‘Diablo’ and in our trials here has proven to be just as impressive. These are the best Brussels Sprouts strain I’ve ever grown and I’ve tried twenty or so. Abacus produces crops over a long period from late autumn through most of the winter if seeds are planted no later than November. Later plantings are not worthwhile.

Elephant Garlic. Eight weeks in and we're doing fine.

It's been eight weeks now since I planted my Elephant Garlic corms that I saved from last year.

They are going well and we've had plenty of rain but there is still a few jobs to do.

Another Saturday and another washed out veggie patch.

Another Saturday and another washed out veggie patch.

I’m beginning to give up hope on having a bumper winter harvest and instead find myself having whimsical daydreams about a bumper Spring veggie garden.
Just about everything I’ve planted is struggling in one way or another.
Also, because I have become so used to dry weather veggie gardening where I use a lot of liquid fertilisers, I’m at a loss about getting my plants fed.
Anyhow, how are things at your place?
May be an image of flower and nature

Comfrey. Is it really that good?

 What are the facts?

Sadly, I find, the facts harder to find than separating the wheat from the chaff but I'll have a bit of a go.

Comfrey has so much wonder and awe heaped on it I tend to become a little sceptical.

So, here are a few thoughts on the topic until I can come up with more facts.

Harvesting my Container Grown Potatoes.

 I harvested my container-grown potatoes.

I had hoped for better results but I'm still more than grateful for what I did get.

Maybe better watering (a weakness of mine) may have yielded better results. I'll try again next season with a few more variables until I stumble on a formula that works well.

Grow Ginger in a Warm Temperate climate. (Three Minute Monday)

I don't get enough growth in a season to harvest my ginger annually, but by harvesting tri-annually, I should get enough for a years supply.

That's the theory, let's see how it goes in action.
