August, so far.

It's Friday the 16th and the end of a very wet week. And by wet I mean 89mm or 3 1/2 inches in the old money.

Absolutely fabulous rainfall for, what is usually, our driest month of the year and a great lead into our upcoming Spring.

Prior to the rain coming I had managed to make good progress on some gardening tasks, including

  • Planting two small rows of Pink Eye potatoes. My concern is that we may have had too much rain and some potatoes will have rotted. Time will tell.
  • I have also purchased and planted seven bare-rooted roses this season and boy oh boy have they enjoyed the rain.
  • Seeds sown include bee balm, meadow sage, beetroot, radish, and parsnip.
  • Seedlings include Chinese Cabbage, Yellow Leaf Lettuce and mini Cabbage, all showing vigorous growth after the rain.
  • I'm also experimenting with Lilium bulbs to see what will grow well in my "warm Temperate" climate. some are up and look like they are doing well and others I'm still waiting for.

Bulbs I planted earlier in the year, like Tulips, Daffodils, Dutch Iris and Anemones, also got a boost from the rain.

How's your August going so far? Wet, dry, cold or windy? I'm calling this August, the Goldilocks' August, just right.

Of course, if you're in the Northern Hemisphere you're heading into your Autumn (Fall, if you must).

It's Rained.

It's rained and by rained I mean goodly amount.

The only thing that remains is weather we'll get some follow up rain in a week or two.

Wednesday, March 7, 2018

Nothing beats rain.

Over the last three or so weeks we've had more rain than I can remember since March/April last year and the veggie garden is loving it.

Everything is putting on new growth and looking very healthy.

It's a joy just walking around and taking it all in.

Here are a few photos showing the fresh new growth in my 'work' patch.

Cheers

Stewart.

It's getting better all the time.

It's been a pretty good Winter so far. There's been dribs and drabs of rain, enough to get sown seeds up and no need for any extra irrigation save for a watering can here or there.

The winter solstice has been and gone and with longer days and shorter shadows I'll soon have reclaim enough garden from the shadows to start planting again.

I've made a list and will be posting shortly what is being planted in the not to distant future.

Busy day and I'm Buggered.

Busy day and I'm now more than buggered. But plenty was achieved.

I planted the Dwarf Sunray Jerusalem Artichoke that I rode all the way to Brisbane to see Jerry Coleby-Williams open garden for.

Helianthus tuberosus

(Dwarf Sunray Jerusalem Artichoke)
I prised a small chunk off my rhubarb some months ago and put it in a pot to hopefully grow on which I'm happy to say it has.

 So today was planting day.

A bucket of  'Witches Brew,' a hole, mix it up a bit and bung it in. Job done.

Just need to mulch it up and we're done.

The coldest and frostiest winter aroung here for years and I decide to try and over winter tomatoes.

Needless to sat they copped a hiding and aren't looking to good at all.

But with the weather slowing warming up a touch of fertiliser and a good watering I thing I'll get a good start on some tomatoes during spring.

I gave a handfull of Rooster Booster fertilised to the Lisbon Lemon I planted a few months back.

Added some mulch and gave it a good drink.

It shouldn't need much more than a regular drink from here on in. Then around the beginning of Autumn I'll give it some more Rooster Booster.

I also placed an order with The Seed Collection who were talking themselves up big on facebook so I thought I'd give them a go.

Turns out they walk the talk and I had my seeds within two days. Very efficient, I must say.

Of the seeds I ordered I only managed to get a few Red Amaranthus and some Red Cabbage planted.

But hey, It's a start.

The BoM is talking up some rain for us here on Saturday and Sunday so fingers crossed I'll get to hear the sound of rain on my tin roof this weekend and get my rainwater tank filled again.

Saturday 16 August

Cloudy. Very high chance of rain. The chance of a thunderstorm in the afternoon and evening. Light winds becoming east to northeasterly 20 to 30 km/h during the morning then becoming light during the evening.

Also did fair bit of liquid fertilising, mulched up some prunings, fixed a gutter that had a hole in it and the rain wasn't getting to the tank.

Cheers and I hope you get some rain

Five Mils

Five mils of rain in the gauge.

That's it, that's all we can muster up.

But we live in hope, hope that next time we, by 'we' I mean gardeners that is, might get six or, heaven forbid, seven even.

Cheers

Stewart.

P.S. Not holding my breath waiting, you know, just in case.

Cheers and soggily yours

So you wake up on a overcast rainy Monday after a rainy weekend and you probably don't really want to go to work. You console yourself by parking your car along the edge of a picturesque creek never thinking in a hundred years this would happen.

I'm assuming most of you have seen the reports on the heavy rain and flash flooding here in Toowoomba so I'm not going to go over old news here.

I have measured just over 300mls of rain here in the last three days so everything is beyond saturation at this point in time..

During yesterdays massive downpour (roughly 40mls of rain /hr for two hrs) we ended up with about 30cms or so of water running through the veggie garden and the back yard itself. I've lost half of my good composted, humus rich topsoil but a blessing in disguise is the weeding I've been unable to get to has helped hold some of the top soil together and stop it being washed away.

Although it's only early January I'm going to have to move on from a summer garden and start planning my autumn/winter garden. Though if the weather becomes I will still plant as much summer salad veggies as I can.

Cheers and soggily yours

Stewart

Rainy nights and days and weeks and months.

This is it. All we've had for the last week and probably all we're going to get for the next week. By the time it stops I'll have to weed the veggie garden with the wipper snipper and wait for it to dry out a bit and start again.

Rain

About time I put something up on the old bloggie thing. Though there's not much to write about lately except for rain. A facebook friend in San Antonio, Texas has even heard about our rain on their news and asked me how I was getting on.

I'm just going to get the machete and see if I can cut a swath through the back yard to the rain gauge to see how much we've had here. I'll be back in 30 minutes or so but just in case you don't hear from me again, then, it's been fun........

......I made it back, I have returned triumphant from my travels to the rain gauge and as I suspected my 120ml rain gauge doth overflowerth. Just too much rain for my little gauge to handle.

338, that's our official total of ml's for the 28 days of December so far, at the airport. And although we are only 6 or 7 k's away from the airport we do receive more rain here than there.

It's amazing to me that only 12 months ago I was disillusioned with the veggie garden due to the ongoing drought and having to lug around watering can after watering can of water to keep the garden alive, and now I'm disillusioned because I can't get out and work on the garden due to the incredible amount of rain we are getting. Maybe with a little luck things will balance out after these extremes and I can settle into some productive veggie gardening.

While I've been talking about rain we haven't received any to-day and it's supposed to be fine tomorrow, and though I am working all day that doesn't matter because it will still be too wet to work in the veggie garden anyway. But if we can get all the planets to line up then on Thursday I should be able to get a few hours outside, so here's hoping for Thursday.

Cheers and beers

Stewart.

Nevele

Nevele/eleven

Walkies again this morning, but nothing as extravagant as yesterday.

Just around the big block to walk out some stiffness from yesterdays epic.

I found this nice reference to the number eleven while I was out so I took a photo and now here it is.

Stuart and Mabel street will mean nothing to anyone. It's just a photo I took to show I was there.

Oops, looks like it's the end of the road for me, but fear not fair maiden, for I have a plan.....umm, what was the plan again???

Ok so this is the top of North street that I refer too from time to time. And yes it is as steep as it looks.

As for the veggie garden we have rain predicted here for tomorrow and I am hoping it will hold off long enough for me to prepare for and plant (direct sow) some carrot, cabbage, cauliflower and brocolli seeds before it sets in.

Cheers for now

Stewart.

P.S. Happy Valentines day.

And I know why he had his head chopped off.

The first representation of Saint Valentine appeared in the Nuremberg Chronicle, (1493); alongside the woodcut portrait of Valentine the text states that he was a Roman priest martyred during the reign of Claudius II, known as Claudius Gothicus. He was arrested and imprisoned upon being caught marrying Christian couples and otherwise aiding Christians who were at the time being persecuted by Claudius in Rome. Helping Christians at this time was considered a crime. Claudius took a liking to this prisoner -- until Valentinus tried to convert the Emperor -- whereupon this priest was condemned to death. He was beaten with clubs and stoned; when that didn't finish him, he was beheaded outside the Flaminian Gate. Various dates are given for the martyrdom or martyrdoms: 269, 270, or 273.[8]

Predicted showers

I shoulda' know better, yesterday the Bureau of Meteorology predicted showers tending to rain and it was fine. Today they predicted fine weather and it is showery tending to rain at times.

How much are we paying these wallies and how much money do we spend on resources for them? I think they could save you/me/us a whole lot of money if they just stuck their head out the window and had a good look around every once and a while.

It is my only day off today, so to speak, and I had planed a fair bit of veggie gardening for today, but all I can do now is enjoy the rain, watch the weeds grow and start knitting the beanie I promised myself.

Cheers for now

Stewart.

26, 26 and 28mls

Since Christmas I've tiped out 26, 26 and 28mls from the rain gauge. I have powdery mildew on everything it can possibly grow on and then some. When it does fine up enough to work in the garden again I'll nearly have to start from scratch. But lovin the rain.

It's supposed to fine up this week so all the squash and zucchinis at the community garden will have to be pulled out. I have to see if I can rescue the rock melons and cucumbers. The rest of the potatoes will have to be dug up as well. I'll probably put in a quick summer green manure crop where they were and use the space for onions and brassicas. It looks like a rat or something is eating the corn before it is anywhere near ripe so it looks like I'll have to spring for some fine chicken wire and surround the corn with it and see if I can keep whatever it is out that way. Does it ever end? I suppose if it's good enough for something else to eat my food I must be doing something right.

And if I can ever remember to but the bloody lid back on the chook food when I finished feeding them I'll be a lot happier with myself too!
I hate it when you got no one to blame but yourself.

Rain? What's that?

I can predict the weather, it's simple. Hot and dry, hot and dry, hot and dry. Rain? Phssstt what's that!!!?

Now if I could just get paid 50 odd grand a year for that I be set!

Can't remember the last time I sung this but I know it was a loooooooonnnnnngggggg time ago!
It's raining; it's pouring.
The old man is snoring.
He went to bed and bumped his head,
And he wouldn't get up in the morning

I'd better go out an water what's left of my withered garden before it turns into a desert.

Cheers from the new Darling Desert.

Cloudy with showers

Australian Government Bureau of Meteorology
Queensland

FORECASTS FOR SOUTHEAST QUEENSLAND
Issued at 4:40am EST on Monday the 9th of November 2009
for Monday

DARLING DOWNS AND GRANITE BELT DISTRICT
Cloudy with showers and possible light rain about the escarpment and the Granite
Belts in the morning, becoming more frequent in the afternoon. Fine elsewhere at
first but with showers and isolated thunderstorms developing throughout in the
afternoon. Moderate to fresh easterly winds.

Well I'll be a monkeys uncle!!! As today is my only day off so to speak, so therefore had big plans for the garden today and now it looks like it's going to shower/rain all day. Oh well, I know what I'd prefer :)

I might have to try some bread and scone making instead. I hope damp weather doesn't effect it too much. Anyone got any tips on bread making on a damp day?

I found this recipe yesterday, Classic Sandwich Bread, from the King Arthur Flour web site. What do you think? It seems to have some good reviews!!
