I had hoped for better results but I'm still more than grateful for what I did get.
Maybe better watering (a weakness of mine) may have yielded better results. I'll try again next season with a few more variables until I stumble on a formula that works well.
August is usually our driest month of the year so to go out and find 16mm of rain in the rain gauge is cause for much joy.
For early August around these parts that is phenomenal rain. Being winter with its low evaporation temperatures this is more than enough to carry the veggie garden through to the next, hopefully not too far away, rain event.
I've often pondered the expression 'rain event' as to mean that it happens so rarely that we call it an event as opposed to something like just another rainy day.
Anyway, I am very grateful for this recent rain event and the garden is almost jumping out of its skin, so to speak. The weeds are too so I guess I'll need to prioritise a weeding session when the garden dries out enough to work on.

Here's a very keen volunteer that isn't prepared to sit around and wait for some more appropriate Tomato growing weather. Our Winter here, so far, has been mild and we've had more rain than usual for our climate. We have a week of 6c. mins and 18/19c. max temp coming up so it's still looking good for this little bloke.
Whoflungdung is a biologically activated, nutrient-rich, weed-free, absorbent super mulch! It's composted, activated by eNcase and filled with nutrients that when added to soil introduces a wide variety of good bacteria to provide healthy growth and reduce weeds. And I've just used it on in my cabbage and broccoli patch.
It's the shortest day of the year for me and the veggie garden but there's still plenty to do, plenty of seeds to sow and plenty of pots to plant.

I tripped and fell awkwardly at work and with a combination of a painful knee, a less than happy shoulder and a few other little niggles I wasn't in the mood for gardening.

🍊 We're in the midst of the worst drought ever here at My Veggie Garden, since the last worst drought ever so I need to work out how long it takes to hand water my Mandarin tree.

It has been composted, inoculated with eNcase and filled with nutrients so that when added to soil it introduces a wide diversity of beneficial bacteria. These beneficial bacteria readily proliferate through the soil, acting as a barrier/deterrent to pathogenic bacteria, providing a safe environment for healthy plant growth. Whoflungdung aids in restricting and reducing the growth of weeds, and many users also happily report that blackbirds don’t like it.
Whoflungdung is absorbent, as it helps retain moisture and warmth in the garden, which improves nutrient uptake. It adds nutrients to the soil for both the beneficial bacteria and plants to feed on – significantly reducing, if not eliminating, the nitrogen draw-down issues that are associated with most other mulches.
Whoflungdung is available in compressed 20kg bales from good hardware and garden supply shops, and in bulk from select suppliers. Apply a uniform layer of Whoflungdung at 25mm to 100mm deep to cover soil, leaving 50mm to 100mm gap around the base of any plants, trees or shrubs. One compressed bale will cover between 4 – 8 m2.

Here are the results of planting tomatoes later than the accepted wisdom.
Not all that pretty now that we are in the middle of winter but this is the most tomatoes I've managed to harvest here in quite some time.

🍄 Should have done this a few weeks ago but today I'm 'potting up' the dwarf mulberry cuttings that have well and truly struck a good and healthy root system.
🍄I'm using 150mm pots to give the plants plenty of room to get established.
🍄 Fairly straight forward job, I just need to give them a watering and then some half-strength liquid fertiliser tomorrow.
