Climbing beans. To pinch or not to pinch.

What do you do when your climbing beans reach the top of your teepee?

Pinch the tip or just let 'em go?

Let me know. So far I have two votes for letting 'em go.

Stewart and the bean pole.

Recently pulled out the sweet peas and since have added compost, garden lime and a few handfuls of Rooster Booster.

Not much to see here but what we do have is potential. And I love potential, it's what I get excited about in the veggie garden.

Planting the seed, waiting in anticipation for them to poke their fresh new leaves up out of the ground.

And then more anticipation watching the vine grow and the first flowers forming and then finally, at last, the bean pod.

  Dig it in lightly.

I’ll let it settle for a week and then plant some climbing beans for summer.

Cheers 'till next time
Stewart.

The Chronicle story.

It just goes to show, you never know who's reading these bloggie things.

Yesterday I received an email from an The Chronicle reporter, that's our local newspaper, asking if she could have a chat to me about a story she is putting together about local veggie gardeners.

Seems she put the question to Dr. Google and up came the 'My Veggie Garden' blog.

Anyway, a time was set a chat was had and we're, that's me, the blog and the veggie garden, supposed to be in the paper tomorrow (5/10). You can be sure I'll post a link to the story when I find it and in the mean time I might have to go and do a little house cleaning for the rush of new visitors coming my way.

Sadly for me I have work tomorrow but the good news is I have all day Sunday and Tuesday to get veggie gardening and at this time of the year there's always something to do and plant.

Zucchini, Sweet Corn, Climbing Beans and some Spring Onions for starters will be getting planted along with the regular jobs of weeding, mulching, watering (is it ever going to rain?)

There's two tomato cuttings that have struck and a Gross Lizzy Tomato that need to be planted out as well.

Plenty to do, cheers and happy veggie gardening

Stewart.

Hot, Hot, Hot.

I guess the scarlet flowers give it away.
Scarlet runner bean @ 3.30pm desperately needing a drink in hot, dry, westerly wind 35 degree heat.

Which it has now received.

Clicking on the photo will give you the big picture.

More heat, more wilting, more watering, where did all the rain go.

More climbing beans.

It's a pretty ordinary photo and doesn't show clearly what I wanted to, but I'll go ahead anyhow.
Firstly the beans seeds on the left are my Scarlet runner beans which are nearly twice the size of my lazy housewife climbing beans.
I took the photo mainly to show the difference between the to types of beans.
Anyhow besides all that I have finally managed to plant them. I simply scratched a small hole about 25/30mm deep and placed two seeds in each hole covered them over and gave them a good watering.
Now being fairly hot around these parts atm I expect to see some new climbing beans in about a weeks time, fingers crossed.
That's it for today, I'm still feeling a bit week from being crook so I'm only doing a little at a time.
Cheers
Stewart
P.S. Maybe I'll get my Chioggia Beetroot planted tomorrow, again fingers crossed:-)

Climbing beans

Ok here we go getting ready for planting the climbing beans. I've got two varieties of CB first is Red Scarlet bean that I picked up from the local hardware and the second is the Lazy Housewife bean that I ordered from diggers.
I've never grown climbing beans before having always planted bush beans so this is new and exciting for me.
You can't pick it up very well but between the two coppers logs there is a light 100 mm wire mesh.
I made this earlier this year and planted sweet peas after adding dolomite and some aged horse manure to the soil.

I pulled the sweet peas out yesterday and today I added two buckets each of compost and aged horse manure.

Then it was a matter of turning it through the soil and giving it a through watering.

I'll let it settle overnight and tomorrow I'll plant my beans.

Here are some of my magic bean mix just sprouting
