Three Minute Monday Ep.10 Harvesting the Potato Bags.

Wow, ep.10 already.

To say I wasn't disappointed would be to tell a lie but they are super yummy potatoes even if the yield was a bit on the light side.

Not sure what I can do differently to improve things. Maybe more potting mix in the pot before I plant. 30cm rather than 15cm.

I might try a different variety next time, see if that makes a difference.

Episode 8 of three Minute Monday

Episode 8 of three Minute Monday is ready for your viewing. Today we're planting sunflower seeds.

Riveting, I know!

Who doesn't love a nice corner of sunflowers in Summer? Well, now's the time to get started and plant your seeds. Here's how.

C is for Carrots

Spring, a great time to plant carrots. And the only way to grow carrots is by planting seeds. Here are a few ideas to help you get off to a good start. #carrots #howtogrowcarrots #organicgardening 📫 Like to sponsor my next video? Let me know here. ssjdmb@hotmail.com 📫 Got a question or suggestion? Let me know here. ssjdmb@hotmail.com Below is a copy and paste from garden.passion_ig on Instagram. https://www.instagram.com/garden.pass... A) Avoid transplanting . B) Sow seed directly in the soil . C) Provide a rock and clay free soil . D) Provide a soft light soil enriched with mineralised organic matter . E) Eliminate obstacles in the soil. Carrots are selfish, greedy and unsociable. They want the soil all to themselves and do not want competition or obstacles. They want to grow fast without hindrance. Any slight disturbance as they dig deeper into the topsoil makes them very very angry . F) Ensure the growing medium is very deep. Any stress or space restrictions experienced by the taproot as it grows vertically will cause immediate deformity . G) Avoid heavy or high-pressure watering until at least they’ve reached a strong seedling stage. Overzealous watering prior to germination is one good reason to displace the volatile seeds and cause them to grow very close to each other . H) Protect the growing medium from animals and birds digging or foraging in the soil. Carrot seeds are notoriously slow to germinate and often they end up displaced growing anywhere bar the position you had initially planned or intended for . I) Give it room to grow. If possible, isolate one seed. You can alternatively create trenches and sprinkle a sand-filled container containing the carrot seeds but you will still probably need to thin them out later as they grow . 💘 Follow @garden.passion_ig for more 😉

Is WHOFLUNGDUNG 💩 a Super-Mulch?

💩I pinched the following blurb from the Neutrog, Whoflungdung web page. http://www.neutrog.com.au/product_range/whoflungdung/

💩Whoflungdung is a biologically activated, nutrient-rich, weed-free, absorbent, super mulch!

It has been composted, inoculated with eNcase and filled with nutrients so that when added to soil it introduces a wide diversity of beneficial bacteria. These beneficial bacteria readily proliferate through the soil, acting as a barrier/deterrent to pathogenic bacteria, providing a safe environment for healthy plant growth. Whoflungdung aids in restricting and reducing the growth of weeds, and many users also happily report that blackbirds don’t like it.

Whoflungdung is absorbent, as it helps retain moisture and warmth in the garden, which improves nutrient uptake. It adds nutrients to the soil for both the beneficial bacteria and plants to feed on – significantly reducing, if not eliminating, the nitrogen draw-down issues that are associated with most other mulches.

Whoflungdung is available in compressed 20kg bales from good hardware and garden supply shops, and in bulk from select suppliers. Apply a uniform layer of Whoflungdung at 25mm to 100mm deep to cover soil, leaving 50mm to 100mm gap around the base of any plants, trees or shrubs. One compressed bale will cover between 4 – 8 m2.

🐣 It was a fabulous Winters afternoon when I went to visit Steve and check out how he went about setting his bathtub worm farm.

A big thanks to Steve for accepting my invitation to visit his place and making this video.

Steve will continue to feed his worms using predominantly kitchen waste.

I’ll check back in on Steve’s worm progress and see how much the worm population has increased.

I also need to apologise for the audio in this video. Steve’s mic worked a treat as you can hear but I had the wrong adaptor on my mic and my audio was unusable so all I had to work with was what was picked up on Steve’s mic.

Also if you have any advice or suggestions for a couple of worm farm novices then, by all means, leave us a comment below.

Here are the results of planting tomatoes later than the accepted wisdom. Not all that pretty now that we are in the middle of winter but this is the most tomatoes I've managed to harvest here in quite some time. How do you go with your tomatoes? Do you think planting later would help? Let me know in the comments.

How to Improving your soil with Leaves

🍄 Leaves, leaves and more leaves. You can never have enough or too many leaves when it comes to improving your soil, and you're always improving your soil. 🍄 I go out early each morning on the weekends and rake up as many leaves as I can and place them in a part of the yard that I have spare and just let them sit there to rot. 🍄 when they are ready I either add them to the compost or spread them around the garden as a sub mulch.

How to improve your garden soil, organically!

I'm hoping you'll find some useful information in this video for improving your garden soil.

Good soil is continually being worked on and maintained. And the more effort you put in the bigger and better will be your reward.

🍄 Step one. Add organic matter, in this case, Blood and Bone and Compost but aged animal manure is good too.

🍄 Plant radish seed into prepared soil, keep moist and harvest in around 28 days.

🍄 Step two. After you've harvested your radish, repeat step one.

🍄 Depending on the season plant with peas or beans.

🍄 When half grown side dress with either compost or aged manure.

🍄Everything you need to know to successfully produce new Box plants from cuttings.

🍄Japanese Box (Buxus microphylla var japonica) is an evergreen hardy compact shrub with dark green oval leaves. Japanese Box or Buxus japonica is the best box hedge for warmer regions as it tolerates heat better than other Buxus plants. It is suitable for full sun to part shade position and requires little water once established. Plant 40 cm apart for hedging. 1m H x 70cm W in 3 years.
